Their job is to decompose work into stable components, then decide what is truly automatable. They run micro experiments, not big bang pilots. Each iteration produces a reusable pattern rather than a fragile script.

Invest in process observation before tool selection. Sit with the team for a week. Record the workarounds. The insights will outperform any vendor demo. Then design the human bot handshake explicitly, with clear escalation paths.

Think of RPA as a junior hire who follows rules literally and never learns unless taught. The missing layer is the supervisor who prepares the training, watches the first weeks, and adjusts the playbook. Remove that supervisor and the hire flounders, no matter how promising the interview.

Enterprises that scale automation treat this layer as permanent infrastructure, funded and staffed like a utility. Those that skip it wonder why their pilots became expensive science projects.
